Tuesday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter January 21, 2020

The collection I’m selling has many flaps from the 1970s and early 80s. Last night I offered up many S1 issues that are pre-fdl issues. The best patch I featured was an unusually tough flap from Lodge 40 which sold not long after I posted it for $150.

Looking ahead to next week I am traveling to the Crossroads of America TOR (Indy). In years past I’ve rode up with Chris Jensen and Matt Delk. If you’ve never been this is becoming more and more the true “don’t miss” show. This event has over 200 tables and a team of volunteers who run a silent auction, live auction and even a “flea market” set of tables. I always do well at this TOR and usually buy more than I sell.

I was encouraged at the recent South Carolina TOR when I had a number of dealers give me checks and reservations for tables at the upcoming Charlotte TOR. One thing that I work very hard on is getting good walk through traffic. We have two Scouting units that help run the event and Collections merit badge that brings in more Scouts. Plus with NO CHARGE for admission it makes it easy to get people in the door.

Yesterday our host for a tour of NC State University was a graduate student who is the niece of a family friend. She is studying animal science and focusing on birds. You can imagine the smile on my face when I brought up the Carolina Parakeet which is the totem from my lodge and the logo for my business. She essentially said that extinct bird was one of her favorites and said rather than cloning dinosaurs that scientists should be trying to bring back the only native parakeet to North America. I’m going to mail her a bag of patches with her favorite bird on them today as a thank you!

Just to keep my options open I’m going to look at one more warehouse space today. The thought of having to move all my stuff is daunting but I want to keep my options open in case I find something better before my lease comes up for renewal. Charlotte has some sky high prices for commercial but I’m looking at the outskirts trying to find some better prices.
