Tuesday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter March 24, 2015

During the recent lodge fellowship that I attended it was interesting to me how many conversations I had with Scouters that were very interested in patches but very wary of dipping their toes into the hobby.

I think there is an illusion that it’s very easy to get ripped off by unscrupulous people. That’s what the chats led me to believe was maybe the #1 thing holding them back. However, one Scouter did mention that she used a tried and true practice. She wanted one of the old Tiger Cub Leader knots and watched on eBay until she found one that was cheaper than all the rest over the period of about a month and then she bit on it.

As someone who has been the hobby for coming up on thirty years it really got me to thinking about how can you see the hobby from the outside looking in instead of my natural viewpoint. Will it take videos, more web resources or an old fashioned book to break that trust barrier and help these Scouters come try out our fun hobby?

I think the biggest barrier may just be communication. There are pretty good resources out there now but you have to know where to find them. You also have to be motivated to do a little homework and maybe the average person isn’t willing to invest the time to figure things out. But it’s an interesting dilemma that has got me thinking.

If you are looking for some NOAC 2-pieces from years past go over to www.ScoutPatchHQ.com and see what I’ve got. You can use coupon code 32315 to get 15% off.

I am off to go proctor some testing at my daughter’s school today. Have a great week.
