Jambo Flags

I recently saw a post that neither i nor ‘search’ can now locate that questioned what one did with old jambo flags… here is the answer… this is the dining hall at Bert Adams if you’ve not been there:

I’ve seen that done at Camp Masonite-Navarro too, dating back to 1950, I think. We have two 1981 NJ flags hanging in the lodge at Cutter Scout Reservation (flags in other years were presented to the Scoutmasters), but they are now dirty with the dust accumulated from time and the signatures that everybody in the troops left on the flags have almost completely faded. So hanging them in the dining hall isn’t the best in terms of historical preservation.

For the 100th Anniversary council dinner, I displayed my NJ flag collection by hanging them around the perimeter of the room. They were a hit, except one person was surprised that I had flags from other councils. She thought I’d only have the flags from Pacific Skyline and our predecessor councils. I wish!

The Dining Hall at Camp Coker (Pee Dee Area, SC) is full of Jambo flags dating all the way back to 1957. In fact there are probably only a few of the council Jambo flags that aren’t up there. Recently a 1957 troop flag was acquired by a collector and offered on eBay for $1500 at auction. Thankfully, he saw fit instead to donate it to the council and I imagine it will join the other flags in the dining hall. I’ll see if I have a picture to post – good topic!

I recall seeing a similar setup at one of the dining halls up in the mid-Atlantic area. I want to say it was at Camp Rodney, but I won’t swear to it.

My 1985 Jamboree troop’s flag was given to the Scoutmaster, as I believe was the practice in the Baltimore Area Council in that era. It’s a shame they weren’t kept/displayed by the council, but I’ll admit that there wasn’t (and isn’t) the space for this sort of dining hall display.
