Friday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter September 25, 2020

This week I have really thrown myself back into my camp director role. We have a small team editing the leaders guide and I’ve been making updates to the camp website. All this is leading up to a very busy few weeks in October of recruiting troops to come to Camp Barstow in 2021.

The first weekend in October I am driving with my Program Director to Fort Myers for the Florida Summer Camp Trade Shows. We set up at Price Sanders Scout Reservation and welcome guests Saturday morning. Then we pack it all up and drive across the peninsula to Davie which is outside of Fort Lauderdale. Sunday we get to talk to South Florida Council troops. There will be dozens of camps there pitching their programs.

The following week on Thursday night we have a virtual camp expo before hosting our camp open house on Sunday the 11th. I have learned that it’s a very competitive landscape in the Carolinas to convince troops to come to your summer camp. Thankfully we have seen a 20-30% growth since the first summer that Chris McDuffie and I came on board.

I have 268 live auctions on eBay right now with most of those scheduled to end this weekend. That group includes 118 nicer OA flaps and issues that close on Sunday. I’ve been able to keep up a steady schedule of auctions so far this fall and I hope to keep up the pace.

Saturday night I am so tickled that I’m going to be attending the season opener for my South Carolina Gamecocks. Through a Scouting friend I was able to purchase two tickets for the game that kicks off at 7:30. I’m taking my son Patrick and this will be his first ever college football game.
