Skyuka 270 100% Brotherhood Conversion Flap
Skyuka lodge has recently issued a rather unusual flap that I expect will be hard for collectors to obtain. This is their new 100% Brotherhood Conversion flap. This also came to me recently from Brad Hutto. Thanks.

Brad reports that this flap is earned if 100% of a troop’s elected OA candidates become Brotherhood members within a year of their tap-out as candidates. I question whether this is accurate. In the best of conditions this would give a Scout only two months to become a Brotherhood member, as he must first be an Ordeal member for ten months. This doesn’t sound correct to me. Perhaps someone can set me straight on this.

I wasn’t told who would get the flap if the requirements were met. Does it go to all the OA members in that 100% Brotherhood Conversion troop. Again, does someone know the full story about this piece.

An attempt to use the existing members in an Unit to motivate the others to earn Brotherhood. Have to see how it works long-term. A Unit can earn when ALL registered OA members (that have not earned it before – can only earn once) in the Unit at a particular time have their Brotherhood. Difficult to earn just due to timing, especially in larger Units. I’m interested to see what happens with the newer members after an Unit has earned it once. If it helps Brotherhood conversion (which should help membership retention), I guess I am not against it. Been around a few years and a few Units have earned it.

From my experience with OA registration, obtaining Brotherhood and ACTIVE member retention have no relationship with each other. Brotherhood members become inactive as quick as Ordeal members. I think the National requirements for Brotherhood conversion were designed by someone who has no idea what is happening at the Lodges. We are pushing members to Brotherhood JUST to get Quality Lodge or maybe not sending out dues renewal slips to Ordeal member who have not made Brotherhood after so many years.

LOL! We’ve certainly been tempted to do that, especially for some adults who enjoy the OA but aren’t into the OBV thing.

On another note, wouldn’t this 100% Brotherhood conversion flap be considered an honor designator, just like the old OBV flaps that were banned? Only Brotherhood or Vigil troop members would be able to wear one.

Technically it wouldn’t be an honor designator flap as Vigil members would get it too. It would be a “restricted” flap which National has discouraged but not forbid.

Personally I think this has crossed the line of appropriateness. Without getting into too much, with Brotherhood, the Ordeal member should decide on their own to seal his/her membership, not be pressured into it by a SM who wants a limited edition Lodge Flap.

Then again I have never been big into numbers, if you have quality program and service, do you really need to be Quality Lodge?
