This is an Original Edition Boy Scouts of America Handbook of

Woodcraft, Scouting, and Life-craft by Ernest Thompson Seton

Published for the Boy Scouts of America by Doubleday, Page &

Company, 1910. The Birch-Bark Roll 9th Edition, combined with

Scouting for Boys. There are 192 pages.

 

It has a red leather-bound cover with gilt imprint — official gold seal with emblem and “Be Prepared” in center and ?Boy Scouts of America – National Headquarters 124 E. 28th St. New York City?

 

The title page says ?with which is incorporated by arrangement General Sir Robert Baden-Powell?s Scouting For Boys?.

 

Cover shows some wear around edges and binding is missing on spine. Pages are all in very good condition, no tears, folds or wear except for color fading consistent of a book of this age. Printed on first page is Dinner Tendered Lieutenant-General Sir Robert S.S. Baden-Powell, K.C.B. At The Waldorf-Astoria September Twenty-Third, 1910 Compliments of the Boy Scouts of America.

 

Hand written on first page is E.T. Hurd, 1911 Official Scout Master of Lowell, Vermont.

 

Also included with the book is a typed letter from the Boy Scouts of America National Headquarters certifying that Rev. E.T. Hurd has received approval of the National Council of the B.S.A. and is hereby duly appointed Scout Master of No. 1 Troop of the city of Lowell, State of Vermont the 20th day of February 1911. And lists William H. Taft, Honorary President; Theodore Roosevelt, Honorary V. President and Ernest Thompson Seton, Chief Scout.

 

The letter goes on to say, By virtue of the authority conferred by this certificate, the following named boys are hereby enrolled as Tenderfeet in the first Lowell Patrol and six names of scouts are handwritten in ink.

 

In addition, included are original type written and signed notes from meetings of the troop held from 1911-1913. These are signed in ink by E.T. Hurd. The first note states E. T. Hurd was elected as Secretary.

 

As 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of the Boys Scouts, this is sure to be a much valued piece of memorabilia!
