Friday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter December 18, 2020

Well for the third time now a very generous Scouter has put the sale of some portion of their Scout collection towards a project at Camp Barstow. Some of you might remember earlier in the year I took the ranger on an $800 shopping spree at Lowes with the proceeds of one sale. This time a Scouter donated the funds to pay for a new 8-bunk leader Adirondack in our Wateree campsite.

This came about because as I was talking to each of these Scouters about their collections they indicated an interest in donating the proceeds to support Scouting. Some people are very fortunate that later in life they are financially secure and enjoy seeing that their Scouting collection can be pay it forward and continue the adventure for future generations. So these three Scouters did that by allowing me to purchase their collections and then they donated the money back into camp projects.

It’s a lot easier to call your guy and cash out some stocks if you want to make a big year end donation. But in this case the Scouters had enjoyed holding onto these items for decades and now with nobody in their family particularly interested they wanted the items to get back into the hands of Scouters who would. Of course if you are reading this newsletter you are one of those collectors!

I have put the brakes on my auction strategy for the holidays and only have 11 closing tonight. Next week my two employees are only going to work a few days and I know people are not as active looking for stuff when there is a holiday. My other account ScoutPatchHQ has a dozen 1950s OA auctions ending tonight including some with nice bids.

I saw on Facebook that fellow collector Wayne Farrar lost his son Phillip yesterday to a sudden illness. Many of us in North Carolina traded with Phillip at Scouting events over the years as his dad was an epic patch trader. I was along for at least one of those rides about a decade ago and always thought Phillip was a funny and nice guy. This year has been one of loss for many in the hobby and I was very sad to read that news this morning. My prayers go out to Wayne and Joy along with their family.
