So Much For Baden-Powell’s Peace Scouts!

Scouts Train to Fight Terrorists

It seems like this would be in violation of the prohibition of scouting groups providing military training.

Whatever, this certainly seems out of line with the values and methods of scouting… it’s one thing to teach kids about using guns for hunting and sport– something entirely different to teach them to hunt and kill humans.

scouting for life has some rather nebulous holes on program content. i think this is a bit too off the scale for anyone of a reasonable stance. Too bad, these kids need to be kids first. Guns for enforcement later, guns for learning now.

This was certainly a shocker to me when I first read it too. Being familiar with law enforcement Explorers, I know that some kids love riding around with cops, learning how to direct traffic, control crowds, etc. They sometimes get to assist the police at major civic events or disasters. One Explorer in my council even called in the 1199 when the officer he was riding with got gunned down at a traffic stop.

Although homeland security and pot raids are apparently now part of police work and might be fun and exciting for Explorers to try, I don’t see any realistic application of that learning within the program. I doubt they would ever be allowed to assist in an actual operation. Hopefully these are only a small fraction of the things they’re learning and experiencing as law enforcement Explorers.

And the press had to get that shot in about child molesters too. <_<
