Sharing Scouting History Through A Pop Up Museum At Conclave

When I talk about recycling your Scouting memorabilia and sharing it with the next generation this is what it looks like IRL. I helped to set up a museum display at an OA conclave in South Carolina with 750 Arrowmen attending. We ran the static displays Friday afternoon and all day Saturday. But the special part was Saturday morning when my collaborator Matt Delk and I did a 1+ hour talk about the history of OA conclaves in our area. I went all the way back to 1933 when the 1st lodge in the Carolina’s was founded.

But what made this talk truly special was I was able to use collections that I had purchased to walk through the history. In particular for me a Scout uniform from East Carolina Council that had a 1941 Carolina Jubilee patch on it. The other collection being a Winston-Salem NC Scout who was super active in the early 1940s and attended all of the early area meetings along with the 1946 and 1948 National OA meetings.

This quick walk through also includes the vest (itself a museum piece) of the former Scout executive of the Central SC Council who as the area OA director helped organize the first Area Z meeting in 1947 at Camp Barstow.
