As a collector, I think that reference books are essential to the hobby. I know I have an entire library of them gleaned from decades of attending TORs and buying collections. Yesterday, David Miura posted a draft of his guide on JSPs asking for feedback. It is reminiscent of the Camp Book style of a database checklist. Please check your council and the ones you collect versus his reference and give him feedback.
From my own experience if you make a guide it really puts some energy into the collecting world. Hank Birdsong has driven an entire OA section with his printed color books that track all of the flaps issued by the lodges which he updates annually. Thankfully, many of the guides today are being put online for free to make it as easy as possible for folks to get the information. About 1/2 of the OA lodges in my section have something in print although not all of them are downloadable.
On eBay, I have 206 live auctions including hat pins and camp patches. I have 82 auctions on the OA patch with some nicer pieces ending Sunday. As you would have seen in the top of the email I posted over 1,000 merit badges into my store yesterday. This is my 10+ year accumulation of post-WWII merit badges.
