I am visiting with my family this weekend and I want to share an exchange between my 5 year old son and his 74 year old grandfather. My dad asked Patrick if he wanted a train set on the condition that I would have to help him set it up. My dad’s big hobby has always been model trains. Patrick replied back “no, I’m really into bubbles”.

So I looked at this exchange a little philosophically because you can’t make somebody else interested in your hobby. Sure over the years growing up Patrick would go to my dad’s train shed and “run the trains” but for whatever reason that seed never grew roots and at least at this point he doesn’t have the train bug.

I have experienced that a little bit with my daughter so far. I’ve taken her to two different trade-o-rees so far and she enjoyed those. But trying to get her to help me organize a potential Girl Scout collection that we could work on together has been like pulling hen’s teeth.

So in the end I’m reminded that we have very little control over whether or not our kids get as interested in this hobby as we are. Instead I’ve been focusing on trying to do things to help plant seeds among youth who have already shown an interest. Whether it’s with the Facebook group, making videos, or websites one of my goals this past year was to try and get and keep more people interested in collecting Scouting memorabilia.

Next weekend is the first TOR of the new year. If you can try and drive down for the Pee Dee Area Council Scout Memorabilia Show on January 3 from 9AM – 4 PM. The show is in Florence, SC and only an hour from Myrtle Beach. Did I mention you can get rooms at the beach dirt cheap in the off season?
