Tuesday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter May 28, 2019

Have you ever been to a funeral where after the invocation the first speaker had all the former Scouts in the audience stand up and recite the Scout Oath? It was a somber and moving experience to take part in. In a packed church about 3-dozen men rose, gave the Scout sign and recited our Oath. His parents and the speakers repeated how much Scouting had meant to Carr growing up.

Carr’s Eagle Scout project was rebuilding the outdoor chapel at a Presbyterian Church camp that has a special place in our congregation. Every summer for over 50 years we’ve sent rising 6th graders from the local schools there as a part of a ministry called Operation Fun. These kids that are recommended by their teachers get to enjoy for many their only spend the night camp of their youth.

It was good to reconnect with so many people having been gone for 3 years since we moved. I got to talk to the Scouter who took over the troop when I handed it over. He has been the SM for over a decade and has seen nearly 60 Scouts reach Eagle under his watch. He told me for their last summer camp they took 44 Scouts so it’s a very strong troop.

With only four days left until summer hits I’m trying to wrap up projects at the office. Hopefully one of those will be a visit to my antique mall to make sure it’s updated and ready for me to drop off the map for a few months. One final take away from the experience yesterday. The words of our Scout Oath matter. It is a mirror on the best in ourselves and reflects to those not in the program the value of Scouting. Every once in awhile you need to have your Scouting batteries recharged and through the grief and loss I left yesterday knowing that what we do as adult volunteers matters.
