When I want to buy an expensive patch for my collection I will usually tell someone about it (after the fact) but I would absolutely pucker up if someone questioned the wisdom of me spending money on more Boy Scout patches. It’s my passion – it’s my hobby, it’s my money, it’s my choice. For some years now I’ve looked at her operation which at one time included renting out the tiny houses on Airbnb and cringed at some choices she made. Even this weekend I kinda stuck my toe in it for questioning the next project she has in the works. But it occurred to me all of this has nothing to do with my opinion, there being an estate to pass on or making money (my swapper brain always goes there). It’s just about her passion project to build something that she enjoys and to fulfill her reason to wake up and be active every day. It’s her hobby!
Any of us should be so blessed that we have the financial resources to pursue a hobby that we enjoy thoroughly. I helped her hang artwork in the carport today and hung a rain chain (I didn’t know what that was). I am not an artsy person by nature but I appreciate that everything she does is a small improvement to the property. I admire all the hardwood trees and the cabins that she built. She appreciates taming the brush one wheelbarrow load at at time. So to everyone I say enjoy your hobby….enjoy your passion and don’t feel obligated for it to make sense to your loved ones, coworkers or friends.
