Tuesday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter April 05, 2022

Long time readers might remember that about 10 months ago I was approached by a costumer in Los Angeles to help source enough early 1960s Scout uniforms to outfit over 100 actors for a scene in an upcoming movie. Eventually my daughter sniffed out on the Internet that this movie set in Arizona and was a Spielberg production. After further hunting yesterday i discovered that the movie (titled The Fabelmans) will be released in November of this year and it is indeed a coming of age movie focused loosely on Spielberg’s childhood in Phoenix, AZ.

I shared this news on Facebook yesterday as I’ve been excited from the beginning to help in any way with a Hollywood movie. The reactions were mostly positive with a few happy to bring up Spielberg’s breakup with the movement during the culture wars. I know a little bit about the scene that the uniforms are being used in and I think it will portray Scouting in a positive light. In the scene two leaders are presenting the protagonist with an award at what I can only describe as a Court of Honor.

I probably should not lean too far out in front of the portrayal of the Scouts. You never know what is cut and edited out in a movie. But for fun I’m going to make a video soon sharing what style of uniforms they wanted down to the neckerchief, patrol patches etc. Maybe this can get some current Scouts excited about vintage uniforms etc. Even after sourcing over 100 uniforms for Hollywood I’ve got plenty more to move!

On eBay this week I have 274 live auctions with a mixture of wide variety of items up for bids. I have Texas camps and event patches, a mix of Utah pieces and OA from Georgia.

I did get forty auctions launched this week for square merit badges that I have been going through. Soon to follow will be my wide tans and on down the line. My goal is to get all my merit badge dupes listed before I head off to camp in June.
