Going to the National Jamboree? Visit the World Scouting Museum in West Virginia

I got the chance to interview Alex who works for Lynn Horne at the World Scouting Musuem while he was attending the Summit Trade-O-Ree. This collection will ring a bell for some in our hobby who will remember it was previously located in Las Vegas. But when Dr. Horne relocated and bought a building in downtown Charleston, West Virginia the museum found a new home.

Alex shares many of the features of museum and his role in the operations. As many troops are headed for the National Jamboree I wanted to share this interview and put it on your travel agenda. If you have been to the museum whether here or in West Virginia please share your experience.

In this episode, Jason Spangler visits with Alex Bennett from the World Scouting Museum in Charleston, West Virginia, just a short drive from the Summit Bechtel Reserve. If you are headed to the National Jamboree, traveling through West Virginia, or simply love Scouting history, this museum needs to be on your list.

Alex shares the story of how the museum moved from Las Vegas to West Virginia, arriving in five tractor trailers packed with Scouting history and memorabilia. The conversation covers the museum’s incredible collections, including Order of the Arrow patches, World Jamboree displays, national jamboree memorabilia, Scouting art, international uniforms, Baden-Powell items, rare books, and unique artifacts from around the world.

The museum is also expanding its programming, offering Scouting Heritage and many other merit badges both in person and virtually. Alex also talks about plans connected to the upcoming National Jamboree, the museum’s new mobile museum RV, possible future trading events, and ways Scouts, Scouters, collectors, and donors can support the museum.

If you are a Scout troop, OA lodge, collector, or family planning a trip to the Summit, this interview gives you a great look at why the World Scouting Museum is worth visiting.

I am always looking to buy Boy Scout collections, Order of the Arrow collections, camp patches, jamboree items, merit badges, uniforms, neckerchiefs, books, and other vintage Scouting memorabilia. If you have a collection you are ready to sell, please reach out — I would love to hear what you have.
