Friday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter November 7, 2014

I am a little late in publishing today’s issue because I wanted to make sure and have the audio published of my new episode of Scouting Hot Finds Radio – the podcast for the Boy Scout memorabilia collecting hobby. My interview today is with Richard Mori and we are talking about his unique strategy for how to buy and sell things in the hobby. It is unique because the word eBay never comes up in the interview.

I’ll invite you to listen to the interview later in this newsletter but first let me give you some nuggets from Richard. A word of wisdom would be to learn about lots of different things so you can recognize an opportunity when you see it. Richard is a dealer in rare books so he is able to mix in Boy Scout and Girl Scout stuff as he travels in a completely different circle of dealers and shows than the rest of us.

One of the other great tips that he shares in the interview is that when he is out hunting he always tries to buy things he has never seen before. Even if he doesn’t know 100% of the story on something if he has never seen it in all his travels he would much rather take a gamble on it rather than buy something he has seen over and over.

One of the key takeaways for me in this interview was you can be successful by building a network of contacts that you can both sell to and buy from. Listening to Richard I can only imagine how many phone numbers he has that he can pull up to try and place items and also get appraisals on items he needs help with.

I’ve been focusing on eBay hot and heavy the last few weeks and have not gotten any new items listed for sale at ScoutPatchHQ.com. I’ll try and change that soon since I’ve got plenty photographed and ready to go.

You can listen to the episode by clicking this link SHF Radio #69: Going Hunting For Rare Books & Memorabilia w/Richard Mori. The interview runs just over thirty minutes long and it has lots of good information and ideas in it. I appreciate Richard sharing his 50 years of experience in the hobby with me and the listeners. I am looking for other people willing to share their ideas for this series. I am especially looking for anybody who is one of these three things, 1. a digger 2. an eBay farmer 3. uses Craigslist successfully. Send me an email me if you utilize one of those strategies and are willing to talk on air.
