Sunday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter December 15, 2024

It’s been a long time since I attended a TOR with just a small cloth bag of stuff and no ambitions other than talking to people. I did have one prearranged deal and some Best Hobby drop offs but mostly I came to see people and pass out some of my own TOR fliers. It’s pretty remarkable that North Carolina has 4 TORs on the calendar nowadays. If you put these shows in your GPS none of them is more than 2 hours drive away from the other.

They are all different and thankfully spread out across the calendar pretty well. But I genuinely think that this many opportunities to see people in person is a great lift to the hobby. I am not advocating for people to rush out necessarily and start more shows but to absolutely support the ones near you that are already established.

So the magic question still remains – how do you get “regular” Scouts and Scouters to attend. I’d love to hear back from the readers on ideas they have seen be successful. I have a three month window to get the word out for my TOR and I’m willing to test out any theory.

On eBay I have 108 live auctions running this week including merit badges, vintage OA, camp patches and more. I have taken the foot off the pedal listing auctions heading into the busy holiday season. But I am ramping up to hit the ground running in 2025.
