Sunday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter April 14, 2024

It’s a lucky April for me when the two conclaves in the Carolinas are on opposite weekends. That’s how the calendar lines up this year with Wahissa 118 hosting the Cardinal Conclave at Camp Raven Knob next weekend. The patch trading is always a little iffy at this event (no offense anyone!) as sometime the patch traders are lucky to have a shelter designated for trading. But I am excited because Saturday I have asked to set up a display for the OA Expo and so I’ll be able to share some cool memorabilia with the participants.

I have always enjoyed 1:1 trading at conclaves and national events. Because I get in so much stuff the opportunity to turn something I have lots of into something new and interesting is always appealing. It’s probably not a great investment in time vs. reward but part of this hobby is just having fun. I have always sincerely believed that swapping with other Scouts and exchanging a patch and a handshake is what it’s all about.

This week I’ve been asked to participate in the Eagle Scout ceremony of one my camp staff members. Over my six years as a Camp Director I have attended award ceremonies and a funeral. So far no weddings! But I feel honored that these Scouts feel like I played a role in their Scouting story and so I’m happy to participate.

I’ve got just over 200 live auctions on eBay including a bunch of OA flaps. The next project we are working on in the office is hat pins and neckerchiefs. So eventually I will have a little more diversity to offer.
