Friday Scouting Hot Finds Newsletter July 15, 2022

Today is the last full day of camp at Barstow. We will finish strong with more fun and an energetic campfire before turning to the closing procedures on Saturday. This year we had more campers than in 2021 which means despite Covid and bankruptcy we are still growing our attendance.

With luck I will sleep in my own bed Saturday night. We have a staff appreciation dinner planned that night but if everything is checked off the list we can head home. Having a deadline is an amazing motivation hack for a camp staff. It’s been a pretty good summer with some of the usual challenges but lots of positive moments and experiences.

This week on eBay I have 249 auctions including some great vintage neckerchiefs that are getting some good bids. I imagine my wife won’t let me get out to the office until Monday. That gives me just a couple of precious days before I leave for NOAC on the following Friday.

One of the neat things about working on camp staff is the opportunity to work with people I’ve known in Scouting for decades. This summer I’ve worked with Matthew Delk, Charles Galloway, Steve Eaton, Austin China and Henry Hall that I’ve known from the last century. But the other cool piece is making friends with new leaders and being impressed with young staff members that really step up.
